The Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Prince Gbolahan Lawal, has signaled a warning the public concerning the application of asbestos as ceiling in homes, saying it could cause cancer.
“Few years back, Lagos State Government ceased the use of asbestos for ceiling because of its carcinogenic effect; we currently use PVCs (plastic) in our estates and buildings.
“Asbestos ceilings are carcinogenic, it causes cancer and if that is what you use in your house you should try and replace it,” he told the press on Sunday.
Lawal called for public awareness on the use of asbestos in public and private buildings.
It has been reported that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an intergovernmental body and a part of the World Health Organization with its headquarters in Lyon, France, labelled asbestos as “carcinogenic to humans,” based on its power to cause mesothelioma and cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box) and ovaries.

Lawal said the state government was considering other options and innovations that would be cheaper and have available local raw materials to flatten the cost of houses.
On the Green Building Initiative, the commissioner acknowledged that the state was collaborating with Echostone, an international eco-friendly construction firm, to evolve its affordable homes initiative.
He explained that the procedure ensured that a 40 per cent of carbon footprints were shrunk in line with global climatic change initiatives.
According to Prince Lawal, the partnership also provided the approval of the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) programme that helps developers reduce their buildings’ energy and water use by 20 per cent while depressing greenhouse gas emissions.
The commissioner added that the state had also introduced eco-friendly water and sewage management system to promote the health and quality of lives of occupants.
Lawal said carbon emissions would be cut if building designs are aimed at proper airing and lighting as well as green areas for houses.
This, he emphasized , would reduce the use of generators and dependence on electricity to power such houses during the day or hot weather.
