BREAKING: Anambra to get massive federal hospital as Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah’s bill passes first reading


Indigenes of Anambra state can now hope for a major federal government project as Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s bill for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre, Uli, passes first reading on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, July 22.

The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District recently emerged number one in the ‘top 10 newbies in the Senate by bills sponsorship’.

Recall that following the general elections in 2019, 46 new entrants were inducted and inaugurated into the upper chamber of the total 109 members.

In a list compiled on July 13, 2020, Nigerian outlet Order Paper, a daily publication in the Westminster system of government which lists the business of parliament for that day’s sitting, the Capital Oil boss who is having his first spell in the National Assembly ranked number one among the first timers in terms of bill sponsorship.

However his bill for the establishment of an FMC in Uli has attracted his colleagues at the National Assembly and it is now becoming a reality as it passes its first reading.

Senator Ubah said: “Undoubtedly, healthcare is a critical matter in every society as it plays a crucial role in the overall well being and survival of the people.

“Currently, there is only one Federal Tertiary Health institution in Anambra state; Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) which is grossly inadequate to cater for the health needs of the people.

“This brings to bear, the urgent need for a Federal Medical Center(FMC) Uli to complement Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) and provide adequate healthcare for the growing population of the state.

“Upon establishment, Anambra will join the list of Southeastern states with a Federal Medical Center such as FMC Imo, FMC Abia and Enugu which boasts of three Federal Health institutions, namely; The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital- Enugu and National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu.

“The establishment of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Uli is not only a necessity but an urgent and imperative factor that will strengthen accessible and effective healthcare delivery in Anambra State.The Federal Medical Center will be fully equipped, maintained and operational to provide medical services for diagnosis, curative and rehabilitative medical treatment.”
