The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Nigerian senate, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, has raised four fresh motions while commending the Nigerian youths for their stand against police brutality.

Ubah also commended IGP Mohammed Adamu for his timely intervention in the longstanding Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) menace following the recent disbandment of the police unit.

The Senator who has been very active during plenary sessions on Tuesday, October 13, rose to salute the patriotic zeal, resilience and resolve of Nigerian youths who stood to resist police brutality in the face of daunting circumstances.

He said: “By virtue of this feat, Nigerian youths can hold their heads high as people of valor that stood tall to be counted when history needed them the most.

“As the leader of the YPP Senate Caucus and National Leader of the Young Progressives Party which is deeply committed to defending and promoting the rights, welfare and aspirations of young Nigerians.

“I reassured Nigerian youths of the YPP Caucus in the National Assembly’s unwavering commitment to continually deploying the instrumentality of the legislature to engage relevant authorities with a view to entrenching institutional reforms and frameworks that will reposition the Police Force to uphold and safeguard the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens as well as ensure cooperation and partnership between the Police and citizens in maintaining peace and combating crime.”

He further raised 4 points to be acted upon without further delay

In view of points raised by me, the Senate accordingly resolved to urge the Inspector General of Police to:

1. Immediately release all arrested protesters and grant independent legal practitioners access to inmates across all SARS detention facilities nationwide.

2. Establish a body saddled with enforcing disciplinary action against police officers caught in any unwarranted, dubious and violent act against Nigerian citizens.

3. Organize compulsory quarterly performance reviews for all police officers and functioning units/departments across all states to ensure that all police officers are held accountable for their actions.

4. Proscribe illegal stopping and checking of phones without an official search warrant as well as digitize all security intelligence apparatus to adopt information technology in carrying out investigations.
